Spanish music and its influence

The Folia is a Renaissance musical motif with origins in the Iberian Peninsula. It is a recurring theme in Spanish music configured in the s. XVI and since then it has been used by composers from all places and times, putting on paper and making all kinds of variations on this theme sound on musical instruments.

Manuel M. Ponce was one of those composers. He composed, with the subsequent help and correction of Andrés Segovia, 20 variations and a Fugue on La Folia. This masterpiece is the culmination, it is “the main dish” -as if we were talking about a tasting menu- of the most important works and composers of Spanish music. After having enjoyed “the starter” by Luis de Narvaez, with the small Baxa de contrapunto, and after “the first main course” by Albéniz, with three of his pieces from the Spanish Suite Op. 47. To end this “musical menu”, we end with the Tárrega “dessert”, with its fresh and light piece called Rosita.

Recorded in 2017 at Sebastián Cuenca’s studio [SC Estudio]. With a more refined musical and technical maturity, this album becomes his hallmark. This album defines him as a musician. Here you can listen to essence’s Hugo.
